Apiary Online Winter 2012

Welcome to APIARY Online Winter 2012, our 3rd completely electronic issue. (Don’t worry – we’ll be back with a print issue in spring, no matter what our evil technophile robot friend here might desire.)

We didn’t ask our writers to adhere to subject guidelines or base their work around a theme; instead, certain themes emerged on their own.

Fittingly for a Philly-based mag, the city itself inspired stories and poems, from the Magic Gardens to a certain bee-collecting truck familiar to the residents of West Philadelphia. Family dynamics (in every imaginable direction) had a strong pull for many of our writers. So did another universal: food, whether it’s pondering how to cook a chicken or indulging in that post-breakup Reese’s cup. Writers also ponder the writing process, either their own or an ode to another’s. Letters, Love and Otherwise are poems to a friend, a lover or even a directive to the reader — Be Nice Or Leave. (That’s how we feel, too.) And finally, Treatment emerged as more and more works about the body, doctors, and healing came our way. It’s the section we least predicted, and the one that might say the most about what’s on our minds right now.

We hope this new format (clickable, separate webpages rather than a bulky PDF) allows for easier reading and sharing of the abundance of great Philly writing within. Enjoy!
